Philip Townshend

Philip Townshend is the Senior Partner and a Solicitor Advocate based in our Coventry office.

Philip Townshend

Philip, a legal executive for 20 years then qualified as a solicitor in 1997 with Rotherham & Co, Solicitors of Coventry, where he was articled to Deputy District Judge Grayson Minshaw. He studied for an Honours Degree in Law at Coventry University over a period of five years on a part-time basis. He also obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice in 1997 from De Montfort University in Leicester.  He qualified as a Solicitor Advocate in 2009.

He set up the firm then known as Charvill Townshends in 1998 and has been responsible for its development. The firm now has three offices in Coventry, Coleshill and Birmingham.

Philip deals with a wide variety of contentious work particularly matrimonial and licensing and is well known for his advocacy skills in all courts from employment tribunals to an appearance before the then Master of the Rolls Lord Justice Woolf. He has appeared against Counsel in many cases including a nineteen-day long contested licensing revocation hearing, and a civil jury trial lasting five days.

He has a wide range of personal and commercial clients. It is a testament to his interpersonal skills and professional abilities that he has been instructed by both Labour and Conservative Councillors on Coventry City Council where he has been a Labour Councillor for eight years. In addition he has been retained in commercial disputes where he has been proactive in alternative dispute resolution where he has enjoyed a high degree of success. He is widely respected by all faiths in Coventry and has been retained by both Sikh and Muslim organisations and community groups.

Philip is Parliamentary Liaison Officer for Warwickshire Law Society.

He is also Chairman of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, which is the fifth largest acute training hospital in the United Kingdom.

Away from his professional commitments Philip’s interests are reading and gardening.
